Even today, the images conjured by the mention of Poland are more likely to be of the Communist austerity than of picturesque medieval towns and cities. But Poland is a multifaceted country where the capital and medieval old towns are inhabited by trendy young professionals and yet horse-drawn carts negotiate country lanes in areas where the 20th century is yet to arrive.
The countryside has many picturesque areas such as the Great Masurian Lakes and the Baltic Sea coast. The most important areas from a property investment perspective are the Capital, Warsaw, and the historic city of Kraków.
The impact of WWII means that the capital is a post-war city. Much of the urban landscape is modern, although the few historic precincts have been painstakingly reconstructed. The city remains the heart of the economy and central to Poland's expected EU-initiated investment property boom. Warsaw's economy is the main driver of the investment property market although tourism is a factor.
Conversely, Kraków is a tourist magnet and great property investment opportunity. The historic city was unscathed in the War and has retained a wealth of old architecture from different periods. The tallest structures on Kraków's skyline are the spires of old churches. Yet Kraków is not a silent memorial to the past: it's a city alive with character and soul. It is also the country's tourist hub, often used as a base for visiting the poignant relics of recent history.
Both Kraków and Warsaw offer interesting property investment opportunities to investors. In time, other towns and rural areas should also feel the benefits of Poland's economic development and increasing prominence on the tourist scene. Prices remain low, but EU entry is helping to ensure that this changes.
