The Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: Rep�blica de El Salvador, IPA: [re'puβlika �e el salβa'�or]) is a country in Central America with a population of approximately 6.9 million people. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the north and east by Honduras, and to the south by the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador is the most densely populated nation on the American mainland (especially in its capital, San Salvador) and also the most industrialized country in the region. The country was named after the Spanish word for "The Savior" and its territory was known prehispanically as Cuscatl�n.
El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.
