241: Major drawback to cheap �1K house

A three-bedroom semi-detached house in Cornwall has been put up for auction for just �1,000.

The property in Wheal Harmony Terrace, Redruth, has one drawback, "serious mining issues", according to West Country Property Auctions.

The area used to be the centre of the county's now defunct mining industry.

Four years ago a couple were forced to leave their home near to Wheal Harmony Terrace after a 200ft mine shaft opened up and swallowed their lawn.

Mining activity was prolific around the Cambourne and Redruth areas from late 1700s until 1800s and a large number of mining shafts run along underground.

According to the former head of the Camborne School of Mines, Professor Keith Atkinson, before 1878, there was no requirement to keep accurate underground plans.

Auctioneer Keith Barton said: "There will be serious, disconcerting mining issues in the immediate vicinity of this property.

"Bidders will have to decide if they think the property is going to last one year or 100 years."

The property is set to be auctioned in Plymouth on Wednesday.
